What does an engine mounting do?
Engine and gearbox mountings hold the engine in the car and absorb its vibration. They are rubber (some are fluid-filled) bonded to metal brackets, and the rubber wears and cracks with age and heat.
What are the common signs of a worn mounting?
- More vibration in the cabin or steering wheel at idle, especially in Drive at a traffic light.
- A knock or clunk when you pull away, change gear or go over a bump.
- The engine visibly rocking when someone revs it with the bonnet open.
Is it safe to keep driving?
A worn mounting lets the engine move more than it should, which strains hoses, wiring and the exhaust. Have it checked by a workshop and change the worn mount before other parts get damaged.
Which mounting do I need?
Most cars have several mounts: an engine mount, a gearbox mount and a lower torque mount. Tell us the noise and where it comes from, with your car plate, and we will tell you which mount it usually is.
